Home for Christmas – Netflix’s New Norwegian Series
Netflix has unveiled its latest Norwegian original series, "Home for Christmas," helmed by Per-Olav Sørensen, who previously directed both "Quicksand" and "Nobel." The announcement was made in Oslo on March 22, 2019.
The series centers on Johanne, a 30-year-old woman who stands alone as the sole single person within her circle of friends and relatives. Worn down by relentless remarks about her relationship status and societal pressure surrounding the ideal family holiday gathering, she embarks on a 24-day mission to secure a romantic partner before Christmas arrives.
Ida Elise Broch, recognized for her performances in "Lilyhammer" and "Det Tredje Øyet," takes on the leading role. Her potential romantic partners are portrayed by Felix Sandman (from "Quicksand"), Kingsford Sayor, and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen.
The six-episode series, filmed in Norwegian, boasts an extensive ensemble including Ghita Nørby, Dennis Storhøi, Anette Hoff, Hege Schøyen, Christian Ruud Kallum, Iselin Shumba, Samantha Gurah, Bjørn Skagestad, Helga Guren, Ragnhild Myntevik, Nader Khademi, Hkeem, Henrik Horge, Ole Christoffer Ertvaag, Line Verndal, Stian Blipp, Sofie Frøysaa, Herbert Nordrum, Jakob Schøyen Andersen, Sajid Malik, Audun Sandem, and Rebekka Nystabakk. Filming commenced in Røros, Norway during March 2019.
Anna Gutto serves as co-director alongside Sørensen. The writing team consists of Miriam Larsen, Mattis Herman Nyquist, Julie Skaufel, Fredrik Høyer, and Per-Olav Sørensen, working from a concept developed by Amir Shaheen and Kristian Andersen. The Oslo Company's Trond Kvernstrøm, Christian Steen, and Anders Tangen handle production duties.
Tesha Crawford, Netflix's Director of International Originals for Northern Europe, expressed enthusiasm about the project: "This entertaining, female-driven narrative excites us because its universal themes—love, ambition, and navigating expectations, particularly during the holiday season—will connect with viewers throughout the Nordic region and globally. Collaborating with such gifted creatives from across the Nordic area is truly an honor, and we're delighted to extend our collaboration with Per-Olav Sørensen."
Director and co-writer Sørensen shared his anticipation: "Working with this exceptionally skilled cast and writing team, we're eager to craft a dramatic comedy with a Christmas backdrop. Our hope is to deliver a feel-good viewing experience that entertains and provokes thought. Partnering with Netflix again so soon after completing 'Quicksand' is thrilling."
